Gators back in action

The Calgary Gators are back in action this Saturday July 17th at 5:00 PM in Sherwood Park against the Renegades. The Gators have sustained two weeks of back-to-back bye's, after beating the Red Deer Buccaneers.

Despite the Renegades record of 0-4, including several tough losses, the Gators will not be taking this game lightly. Several starting offensive players will be absent for this game, which will give a few others an opportunity to showcase their talents when it counts!

Most importantly, Saturday will see the return of the Gator QB & leader, Dan Strikaitis, as he returns from a couple bumps and bruises.

STILL RECRUITING FOR 2010 SEASON!!!

If you are looking to play with a championship caliber team, you've made the right stop! The Calgary Gators have a great track record for putting winning teams on the field. The Gators play in the AFL (Alberta Football League) and are a part of the CMFL (Canadian Major Football League), governed by CIS rules.

In 1998, the Gators Inaugural Season, the team went undefeated and won the AFL with a perfect record. After several trips to the AFL Finals and Semi-Finals through the following years, the Gators seemed to have turned a page by defeating their rival team, the Calgary Wolfpack twice in 2007. The celebration was short lived as the Gators lost a hard fought game to the Edmonton Stallions in the AFL Finals. We need you to take us to the next level!

The Calgary Gators are looking for players with full contact experience or flag players who would like to give it a try. All positions are available - no positions are secure until game day!

Fill out the 2010 Calgary Gator Registration form.

Calgary Gators 26, Red Deer Buccaneers 13

Dan Craig looked solid in his Gators debut, Completing 64.7% of his passes for 235 yards with 2 TDs and 2INTs and 1 rushing TD. But the real grinder on offence was Mitch "the kid" Szigety who ran for 134 yards on 17 carries, an average of 7.9 yards per rush and a TD. Mitch broke a big run for 34 yards on a draw play that set up the 1 yard pass to WR Mike Wasylyniuk. Mike also danced defenders out of their shoes on a big 78 yard reception for a TD. Mike Edward also had a good day, grabbing 75 yards on 4 receptions and picking up all kinds of yardage after his catches.

The Gators were led by veteran LB Brad Richmond on defence, finishing the day with 7 solos and 2 helpers. Devron Brown playing his first game in a long time at DT, was a menace up the middle all day, pressuring the Bucs QB, chasing backs and picking up 2 solos and 2 assists, 1 for a loss. The Gators secondary looked fantastic despite missing two key starters. With knockdowns from DB's Miles Myers, Neil Scotland, and LB Andrew Patzer who returned to form registering 4 solos and an INT for 3 yards.

Patzer pinned the Bucs deep on several occasions with 8 punts for 321 yards, his longest being a rocket for 57 yards.

The Gators have 2 weeks off now and look forward to a rest, coming back on July 17th against the Sherwood Park Renegades.

Gators back in action

The Calgary Gators are back in action this Saturday June 26 at 6:00 PM in Red Deer against the Bucs. The Gators are coming off a tough loss to the Lloydminister Vandals 10-3 two weeks ago.

The Gators are hoping that the bye week will help them get back on track when they face the Bucs. In their only matchup last year, the Gators defeated the Bucs 27-6 on the back of QB Dan Strikaitis who took over in the 2nd half and led the Gators to victory.

The Gators D will be relying on DE Devron Brown to repeat his performance from last year. Devron dominated the Bucs Offense registering several tackles for losses and multiple sacks.

Gators Fall in Thriller

Download Gator Game 2 stats

The Calgary Gators lost their second game of the season, falling to the Lloydminister Vandals 10-3. The game was a defensive struggle with both teams exchanging field goals to close out the 1st half. Gators kicker and proud new papa Ian Hewit got the Gators on the board with a booming FG in the 2nd quarter. The Gator D brought the wood to the Vandals with several big hits from Tony Verbrugge, Devron "the anaconda" Brown to name a few. The 1st half was closed out with a thundering TD saving hit by #2 FS Scott Cowick.

Miles Myers had a all-star performance with 3 Turnovers!! almost returning 1 for a TD. Brothers Ian and Neil Scotland had another strong game shutting down the passing game and contributing with several tackles. The Vandals well known hard pounding ground game was stuffed by the Gators front 7 which resulted in several wild scrambles from the Vandals QB.

The Gators offense was once again let by WR MIke Wasylyniuk, who faced double coverage all day yet managed to snag several key receptions. The double team also opened up the field for the other Gators WR's. Mike Edwards and Taylor Cambell had some big catches to extend drives. The 1-2 punch of RB's #22 Mitch "The kid" Szigety and #1 Caleb McLeay ran the ball well for the Gators, Szigety left a few defenders on their backs with his North/South style running while McLeay left quiet a few Vandals hugging air with his shiftiness.

The Gators now have a Bye week and are back in action on June 26 in Red Deer against the Buccaneers.

Offensive -Mike Edwards 5 Catches, 103 yards
Defensive -Miles Myers 2 INTs for 30 yards, 2 Tackles, and a fumble recovery
Special Teams -Mitch Szigety 3 solo tackles, and 1 assist

The Gators are looking to play a whole 60 minutes this week, after coming off a tough loss to the Wolfpack in week 1 (41-19). The Vandals however, seemed to cakewalk over the new Lancaster Legion in their home opener (72-6).

Last season the Gators lost to the Vandals 29-10, in a physical game that saw a lot of veteran Vandal's QB Jared Valleau's scrambling abilities. The Gator Defensive line will have their work cut out for them again this week.

The Gators have a chance to tie-up their lifetime series with the Vandals this weekend ... The Vandals have won 4 of the last 7 games against the Gators.

Good luck to all teams in the upcoming season.

The Calgary Gators open up the 2010 AFL season on June 5 against their cross town rivals, the Calgary Wolfpack. The Gators faced the Wolfpack in the 2009 playoffs and fell short 19- 3. The game is scheduled for 6:00 PM at Shouldice Field.

The 2010 Gators are a much different looking team than the 2009 squad, starting with uniforms. The Gators will unveil their new look on June 5 against the Wolfpack. The Gator offense also boasts a new look with the addition of several key players that will help put more points on the board. The Gator D, known for being a hard nosed group also looks strong with new additions to go along with the return of several key players from the 2009 team.

The Calgary Gators would like to welcome the Lancaster Legion and Sherwood Park Renegades to the Alberta Football League for the 2010 season.

Good luck to all teams in the upcoming season.

2010 Gators Schedule

a BIG Thank You! goes out to Scott Cowick, and Clifton Cox who coordinated with others to finalize the Gators 2010 schedule.

The Gators would also like to thank Dave Hanni and the Reddeer Buccaneers, Amos Aldred and the Grand Prairie Drillers, for also adjusting their schedules to better accomodate us. By the-letter-of-the-law, this did not have to happen. Both Hanni, and Amos acted in the best interests of the league, and sportsmanship.

Thanks again, boys!

side note: This adjustment effectively puts 'Gator Rookie Night' on August 7th.

"Newlook" Gator Offense

The 2010 Gator offense is beginng to gel with the much needed addition of some big play receivers. Jeremy Ball, a former league all-star returns to the team after a few years off. Jeremy Linsey, and Wade Rothel have both returned to the gridiron, and have been making impressive catches early on. The Gators also welcome Mike Wasylyniuk, a stand out WR with University of Alberta Golden Bears. The 4 additions, and a bunch of rookies, as well as the return of 2009 Gator offensive MVP, Mike Edwards, should take the pressure off the run game. The backfield will benefit by having the full time services of Caleb Mcleay, after only playing in a handful of games last season. QB Dan Strikaitis looks very comfortable in the pocket with all the available fire power around him.

Big Gator D, just got BIGGER!

Marcus Parker
The Gators already formidable defensive line just became far more intimidating. Marcus Parker. Who played end, and tackle for 2 seasons with the Calgary Stampeders has agreed to sign on with the Calgary Gators. "With Devron and Marcus on the ends, Tony, Drew, and Shaun in the middle ... I would say offensive lines of the AFL are going to have their hands full, to say the least" said Clifton Cox, Gator VP.

"The addition of Parker helps bolster an already talented front 7. Returning linebackers Richmond, Patzer, Cox, and myself ... The Gators D will be out to make a statement this year" quoted Scott Cowick, Gators Director of Communications.

"Not to mention the dangerous secondary, led by the hardest hitting halfback in the AFL, Kyle Heier"

Special thanks to Tony Verbrugge and our President Don Nelson on attending the 31st annual Athletes in Action Grey Cup Breakfast! Our boys introduced themselves, the Gators, and the AFL to such CFL greats as Pinball Clemons, Anthony Calvillo, Kerry Joseph, Kenyon Rambo, Henry Burris, Patrick Kabongo (who made Tony look normal-sized for once!) and many more, as well as some prominent business owners in the Calgary area. You two did an excellent job of representing us and the AFL!
